Do I need to register my foreign vehicle in Georgia?
I’m from Toronto (Canada) and will be working for one year in Atlanta. I’ll be driving my car down and do not plan to change my plate, register it in Georgia, etc. It’s important to note that I will not be claiming residency in Georgia but will work 2-3 weeks of each month there and then fly home to Toronto for the remainder. I’ll be getting a TN (Free Trade) visa to work in the US and will be legal.
My question is this…what is the consequence of not registering my vehicle? It will be fully insured and will still have my Ontario plates. I know that if I take up residency in Georgia, I have 30 days to register an out of state vehicle. My problem is that I won’t be a resident so I think that even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t be allowed to register the car.
Any guidance on where I could get info would be appreciated.
One detail that may help; I will have an apartment while in Atlanta although I will maintain my permanent residence in Ontario.
If you are WORKING in the state of Georgia you need to be registered in the state. Police routinely look at employee parking areas for out of state/country plates. Yours will be pretty noticable.

No need to register your car in Georgia if you have it registered in Ontario, as long as you have an address in Ontario. If you have a permanent address in Georgia than you must register it there. From what I read you are just here working so there is no need to change anything as long as your plates are up to date and you have insurance. If you get a Georgia D.L. then you will need to change your registion. Work safe.
