Very sad that the Olympics have to be soured by things like this. When I first heard about this back in 1996 I thought of the 1972 hostage that occured at the Olympics.

Man, I remember that night. We hauled out of there as soon as we heard the explosion. Went straight to Marta then to payphones to call our parents to let them know we were ok.

It was initially blamed on a security guard whose quick response saved lives: Richard Jewel. Jewel was on it so fast – investigators thought he planted the bomb. They were wrong – LC

I think its sad how a lot of people say that Atlanta was the worst olympics just because of this bomb. They couldn’t control that.
I think Atlanta did a great job as host of the Olympics.

  14. Like the reporter, …
Like the reporter, I had just come from the park no more than 10 minutes before the blast. My car was only two blocks away and I was well on my way home when the blast happened. I had no idea until I got home and turned on the TV and saw what had happened. It was awful, just awful.

In cruel irony, Richard Jewell was a hero here, reporting the suspicious package and moving people away from the area. I’m convinced he saved lives. I’m glad he finally got an apology.
