Can I use a Scientific Atlanta DVR without Service?

I know it sounds stupid to ask ‘without service’ but i bought a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 at a garage sale, and i want to know if i can use the DVR function with my cable. Im 99.9 Percent sure its a time warner box since this is the service out here. oh, and i already have time warner, with DVR’s, i just don’t want to pay them the extra 15 dollars to ‘rent’ the box, seeing as i already have it

If you own that box, and its serial number shows up in their system as "purchased equipment", You can add it to your account, and likely not need to pay monthly. (Benefit of purchasing a box).

If the guy who sold it to you, got it as a rental, You can rent it from your cable company (cause regardless of you buying it at a garage sale, the cable company still owned it.) or return it.

If the guy who sold it to you, purchased it from another cable company, or from Scientific atlanta, than it is worthless. Your cable company wont likely allow it in their network, cause they want you to buy or rent theirs.

Best buy, call the provider and ask if that box can be added to your account.

    The box needs activated to do anything at all, and you need to call the provider to do that.

  2. no the boxes are addressable and basically it is stolen and they will know you have it
